Why "Sit Still Sam?"

"Sit still, Sam - we're goin' around the corner," is something my dad used to jokingly say in the car, sort of like saying, "Hold on tight!" I think his dad used to say it. It makes zero sense to anyone outside our family! However, it means something to me, and this blog is my crazy attempt to document my journey to health and lots of other great things! In other words, I'm trying to turn a corner. Well, I'm always turning corners. We all are, whether we realize it or not. You're also likely to find me sharing whatever happens to amuse me or pass through my brain on any given day. You may find a poll, a recipe, a random photo, thyroid and diet information, photos from my latest vacation... it's a little like playing Roulette. If you find something helpful, amusing, touching, or interesting, please leave me a comment to let me know you stopped by! :)

Thyroid Info

So what exactly is Hashimoto's Disease?

For most, it's some combination of fatigue, unexplained weight gain, feeling cold, low libido, thinning hair, aches and pains, puffy eyes or swelling of the face and/or eyes, and lots of other fun stuff! For me, I got lucky. I was diagnosed early, due to eyelid swelling. Thanks to friends and resources put in my path, I'm optimistic that I'm in control of my health now and will hopefully never have to deal with these complaints! But as Gena Lee Nolin relates in her new book, Beautiful Inside & Out - Conquering Thyroid Disease with a Healthy, Happy, "Thyroid Sexy" Life - "Conservative estimates say that at minimum, there are 27 million Americans with thyroid disease, and most of them are women, and most are undiagnosed...When I talk to some of the experts, they say that the actual number of thyroid patients is actually close to 60 million. That means that one in five Americans probably has a thyroid problem, most of them women who don't even know it."

This is a growing collection of resources I've found regarding this chaos called Hashimoto's Disease. It's partly to help me find information again, and maybe it will help someone else! I can't begin to tell you how many friends and family have come out of the thyroid closet since I was diagnosed! I've gotten lots of support and helpful info!  I know others that aren't getting the right blood work done, are following traditional medical advice, and not being helped or treated properly! Even my mom's doctor, after being told I have Hashimoto's, didn't run the antibody tests (which is the only TRUE indicators of the disease)! Don't even get me started!!!
